4-H, legislators team up in first beef showmanship

In an event that will undoubtedly be a longstanding tradition at the South Dakota State Fair, the 2009 Inaugural Legislative Beef Showmanship Contest was a true success. In efforts to build awareness of agriculture issues and events, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and 4-H teamed up during the state fair to host this contest. This high profile event had state legislators working with 4-H youth in a beef cattle showmanship contest. The 4-H kids worked with their legislators in teaching them how to show cattle, while legislators taught the students about the government process. Not only was it a very fun event for all involved, but it helped create a buzz about agriculture to those that make the big decisions in our government.

Coaching the legislators were South Dakota 4-H members: Calli Pritchard, Aurora; Maggie and Jill Stern, Garden City; Kaley Nolz, Mitchell; Calder Eschenbaum, Lake Preston; Wyatt DeJong, Kennebec; Janae and Caroline Hansen, Turton; Chelsea and Victoria Albrecht, Arlington; Blaine Geppert, Pukwana; Alex Jung, Aberdeen; Dayton and Merial Vanderwal, Volga; Courtney Johnson, Huron; Cassidy Wulf, Brookings; and Sam Schaunaman, Aberdeen.

Participating legislators included: Senator Jean Hunhoff (R-Yankton), Representative Charlie Hoffman (R-Eureka), Senator Mike Vehle (R-Mitchell), Representative Shantel Krebs (R-Renner), Senator Jim Hundstad (D-Bath), Representative Jim Bolin (R-Canton), Representative Quinten Burg (D-Wessington Springs), Representative Lance Carson (R-Mitchell), Representative H. Paul Dennert (D-Columbia), Representative Dennis Feickert (D-Aberdeen), Representative Marc Feinstein (D-Sioux Falls), Senator Tom Hansen (R-Huron), Representative Kristi Noem (R-Castlewood), Larry Tidemann (Mitchell), Darlene Kutzler (Huron), and Representative Susan Wismer (D-Britton).
