Larry Dee Martin, age 73, of Kirby, MT, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
Larry was born Sept. 29, 1937 the son of Iver "Scotty" and Dorothy Martin in Glasgow, MT. He grew up and attended schools in Glasgow. At the age of 17, after graduating from Glasgow High School, he made his home in Kirby, MT.
He was united in marriage to Caroline Ann Small on June 23, 1960. Together they ranched in Kirby, which he continued to do for the rest of his life. In 1961 they decided they wanted a barrel racer and so April was born. A year later they added a pole bender to their family with Misty. They prayed for a bareback rider in Jay T, but got a bull rider instead. And finally, eleven years later, Larry and Caroline were surprised with CT, the Naval Officer of the family.
Larry had a passion for bareback riding and was instrumental in the creation of the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame in Wolf Point, MT. He won three trophy saddles. In 1963 and 1967 he received the NRCA Champion Bareback Rider and in 1981, he received the Old Timers All Around saddle. He loved the rodeo trail. Larry was also a wrangler in the movies "Wild Times," "Little Big Man," "Walks Far Woman," "Return to Lonesome Dove" and "Endangered Species." Larry had numerous other passions: he loved to fly, chase coyotes on snowmobiles, race chariot teams and Indian relay races. He also enjoyed following his nephew, Jess Martin's ProRodeo saddle bronc riding career.
