August 20 Cabela's Dutch Oven Cook Off winners

MITCHELL, SD - Cabela's hosted its 6th Annual Dutch Oven Cook Off on Saturday, Aug. 20. Eleven adult teams and six youth teams attended, despite early morning rains, to create 15 main courses and 15 desserts. As usual, Cabela's sponsored the main course secret meat and spice this year; "something fowl" that turned out to be chicken breasts! Taking home the prizes were:

Main course: 1. Jason Gebhard and Dave Johnson of Mitchell, SD, also known as the "Bacon Brothers" with their Jambalaya; 2. Lefty Olson of Papillion, NE and "Chuck" of Wisconsin with Jack Daniels Fried Chicken; 3. Wes Stigen of Iola, WI with Enchilada Suisa; 4. Luinea Caldwell and Regina Geringer of Brandon, SD with Chicken Marsala; and 5. Clell Swanson of Canton, SD with Crispy Chicken Nuggets and Taters.

Desserts: 1. Jim Johnsen of Wessington, SD with Old Fashion Peach Cobbler; 2. Adam Johnsen of Sioux Falls, SD with Black Forest Cake; 3. Luinea Caldwell and Regina Geringer, Brandon, SD with Chocolate Turtle Cheese Cake; 4. Clell Swanson of Canton, SD with Pecan Pie Muffin Cake; and 5. Youth main course: 1. Nathan and Matthew with Bacon Chicken Dumplings; 2. Caleb and Ellie with Cheesy Hashbrown Bacon Egg Bake; 3. CJ with Gravy Smothered Pork Chops; and 4. Allison with Lamb and Veggies.

The skies cleared by 10 a.m. and the local and professional judges had a great time seeing all the unusual recipes cooked in Dutch ovens. Hundreds of Cabela shoppers enjoyed these amazing Dutch oven dishes. Adding fun for everyone was the addition of the youth competition this year. Also new this year, Cabela's allowed the public choose a "Friendliest Camp" - taking home this great prize was Luinea Caldwell and Regina Geringer. Cabela's is known for hosting great events and offering wonderful prizes, as well as a good sale during their annual Fall Expo Weekend.

The Dutch oven cooks will be back Oct. 15-16 for the Annual Pheasant Opener Weekend, so be sure to come out and sample the delicious food and take advantage of the great season opener sales.
