This spring, Veterinary Medical Center partnered with Pfizer Animal Health to contribute $5,910 to six Midwest FFA chapters, offering added support and resources. Since many of Veterinary Medical Center's 55 employees are former FFA members themselves, supporting youth in agriculture is an important cause.
"FFA is a great organization that teaches superior leadership skills and helps to create future agriculture leaders," said Steve Dudley, DVM, Veterinary Medical Center. "The skill set that FFA students learn are valuable skills to be successful business folks down the road whether involved in agriculture or not. We appreciate the local support that producers give us, and we are happy to be giving back."
All five locations of Veterinary Medical Center contributed to the program, bringing support from practices in Worthington, MN; Slayton, MN; Adrian, MN; Wessington Springs, SD; and Sheldon, IA. Nationwide, participating veterinarians and retail partners directed funds from a portion of their purchases of select Pfizer Animal Health cattle products to their choice of any local FFA chapter(s) or the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation - Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund. Since its inception in 2008, more than $3.6 million has been donated through the FFA and AABP Foundation Support Program nationwide.
"Funding continues to be a challenge for organizations like FFA, so we will continue support where there is a need," Dudley said. "The Pfizer Animal Health Support Program is a key component that makes it easy for us to participate and give back to local FFA chapters."
The Worthington, MN, FFA Chapter received a portion of the funds and used the donation to cover travel and lodging expenses for the 2011 National FFA Convention as well as state and local convention expenses.
"A lot of our students wouldn't have been able to gain extra exposure to new and different activities," said Deb Martin, Worthington, MN FFA adviser. "The donation really makes a difference and allows students to experience things that may not be available otherwise. This is a great program and really supports our chapter."
