KEARNEY, NE - A group of 39 athletes, including veteran marathoners and first-time runners, participated as "Team Beef" in the 35th Annual Lincoln National Guard Marathon & Half-Marathon on Sunday, May 6. The running team was developed by the Nebraska Beef Council intern program and is funded by the Nebraska Beef Checkoff.
The Team Beef members attended educational seminars prior to the race, sponsored by the Nebraska Beef Council, which included tips on running a marathon, the import role that beef can play when training for a race and ways to include beef in a healthy diet. The team also sported matching running shirts with the Team Beef logo on the front and words "Beef. Fuel for the finish" on the back.
"Beef plays an important role in an overall healthful lifestyle, including weight control," said Kaiti George, Director of Nutrition and Education for the Nebraska Beef Council. "A substantial body of evidence shows the nutrients in lean beef, such as protein, iron and B-vitamins help maintain a healthy weight, build muscle and fuel physical activity."
A 3-ounce serving of lean beef provides 154 calories, on average, and nearly 50 percent of the daily value for protein. Research shows that eating lean beef as part of a balanced diet and being physically active can help maintain a healthy weight.
"I was proud to run in a Team Beef shirt, promoting two things I love - running and beef," said Dr. Chris Calkins, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) meat scientist and Team Beef runner. "Any time we can promote a healthy, active lifestyle it helps everyone involved."
