2012 Christensen Simmental Annual Production Sale

Chris and Sheila Christensen and family held their 41st Annual Spring production sale at the ranch northwest of Wessington Springs, SD on April 28. This area of South Dakota had seen rain prior to the sale; sale day was cloudy and overcast but dry. Rain was welcome in the area, keeping some people out of the field and able to attend the sale to buy bulls.

Christensen Simmental specializes in raising high-performance Simmental- and Angus-based cattle including registered and commercial bulls, heifers and club calves. These cattle are bred to thrive in South Dakota range conditions on a roughage-based diet with no creep feed.

The sale bulls were in great condition. They had been developed in a 40-acre pasture that allowed plenty of exercise to ensure sound feet and legs. The bulls were sound, thick and ready for work.

Topping the sale was Lot 56, 652Y, a black, polled, three-quarter SimAngus April 2011 son of TC Aberdeen 759 out of a 3C Macho dam. This bull had a weaning ratio of 106, yearling ratio of 107 with a 39-centimeter scrotal and scanned a 15.5 square inch ribeye. Bryan Thompson, Upham, ND, was the buyer at $9,500.

Lot 59, 512Y, a March 2011 black SimAngus son of TC Aberdeen with weaning ratio of 113, and yearling weight of 1,114 pounds sold to James Evans, White Lake, SD, for $7,750.

Todd Mortenson, Hayes, SD, selected Lot 3, Y147, a black, polled SimAngus son of BC Mid Emblazon out of a Black Joker dam for $6,000. This bull had a weaning weight of 754 pounds to ratio 120, yearling weight of 1,246 pounds to ratio 105, 40-centimeter scrotal and 14.9 square inch ribeye area.

Lot 43, 442Y, an April 2011 black, blaze face, SimAngus son of Kesslers Frontman sold to Apex Cattle Co., Dannenbrog, NE, for $5,750.

Lot 124, Y322, a black polled, purebred Simmental bull sired by ES Will WP32 out of an ER Big Sky 545B cow sold to Mike Aesoph, Highmore, SD, for $5,300. This bull had a weaning ratio of 106, yearling ratio of 110 and EPDs of BW -2.7, WW 28.9, YW 62.4, MCE 11 and Milk 7.6.

Selling at $5,250 was Lot 6, Y343, a May 2011 black, polled SimAngus bull sired by 3C Opie out of an Emblazon dam. This bull weaned off at 669 pounds to ratio 107, had a yearling weight of 1,365 pounds to ratio 115 and sold to John Hoffman, Wessington, SD.
