South Dakota: 2012 Art In The Barn fiber show is June 15-17 in Newell

The second annual Art In The Barn fiber show will be held June 15-17 in Newell, SD. The doors are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Held at the Ram Show building adjacent to the rodeo grounds, the indoor show will bring high-quality and unique fiber products together with various fiber artists.

The event, which began in 2011, is the brainchild of Newell-area artist Barb Uhrig.

"This all started when the Ram Sale committee wanted to see the building used more. I'm on the committee and have always had a small fiber show during the Ram Show and Sale and have always enjoyed it so much. Last year I started this show and we had a blast," Uhrig said.

According to Uhrig, last year's event was such a success and so much fun that everyone who participated last year will be coming back. Newcomers heard about the event by word of mouth are will make their debut this year.

"We'll have fiber processors from cottage industry woolen mills from Groton, SD; Claremont, WY; and Black Hawk, SD," Uhrig stated. "There are so many breeds of sheep out there with a wide variety of wool. I wanted to get a diverse group of breeders and fiber artists together with this show, and it's really worked out well."

Sheep wool won't be the only fiber featured at the event, as fiber from goats, rabbits, alpaca, llamas and even dogs and buffalo will be on display.

"We'd like to eventually get the different types of fiber animals here on display," Uhrig said. "That would really be interesting for the public to see."

Besides the fiber show, there will also be demonstrations and classes on carding and spinning fiber, plus felting and other fiber art forms. There will be a spinning circle where attendees can bring their own spinning wheel or use one that is there.

About 20 vendors will set up their wares at the show, selling everything from fiber; yarn; felted, knitted, crocheted and embroidered items; soaps and lotions; sculptures; hand spindles; bags; jewelry; beads; tack; Twisted X Boots; metal garden items and signs; art dolls; and photography.

On Saturday the show features a fleece competition, with judging beginning at 9 a.m. The event is sponsored by the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association. Other fibers will be judged at 8 a.m.

In conjunction with the events taking place Saturday, the arena next door will host a Working Sheepdog Trial. Top handlers from Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and South Dakota are entered and can compete with up to three dogs. The trial starts at 8 a.m.

Uhrig is excited about the upcoming show and encourages everyone to come. "There's something for everyone there!" she stated.
