Now in it's 55th year, the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo® continues to break records year after year both in attendence and through sale revenues. The 2013 edition of the First Interstate Bank Horse Sale once again commanded top dollar on consignments, totalling 178 this year. The popular event took place at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in downtown Rapid City on Jan.25 & 26.
Following a daily preview each morning at the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds, the sale was staged in Rushmore Hall of the Civic Center in the Crystalyx BioBarrel Show Ring. Standing room only crowds filled the facility both days with active bidding that also included internet and telephone bidding. Corporate sponsors for 2013 included First Interstate Bank, Ravelette Publications, Inc, Cattle Business Weekly, Scoggins Veterinary, RDO Equipment and Larry Larson Photography, Inc. Auctioneer Lynn Weishaar, Reva, SD, and Announcer John E. Johnson from Piedmont, SD, rolled through the rapidly paced sale each day which consisted of consignments that were carefully prescreened by the BHSS sale committee.
The 2010 Bay Stallion Rare Sun Rising was a consignment from Cowan Brothers, LLC, Highmore, SD, and commanded a new BHSS record bid of $25,500. He is sired by the 1995 AQHA Champion Aged Running Stallion Rare Bar si 114, the producer of progeny with winnings of over two million dollars. He is out of PC Suntrific, an own daughter of the Cowan Ranch's legendary sire Sun Frost. Well known barrel racing champion Cindy Wheeler from Fredericksburg, TX, had the final bid on this promising young stallion who projects a very bright future in the performance arena.
Consigned through the Friday sale was Seven S Gunpoint, a 2005 Buckskin Stallion sired by AQHA Superhorse Real Gun by Playgun. Out of an own daughter of Smart Little Lena, the finished reining, roping and cowhorse was consigned by Dan Whetham from Belle Fourche, SD, and left the ring at $21,500 on a bid from Tom Smith from Mobridge, SD.
One of the top sellers on the Saturday sale, Peppers Gotadvantage, a 2007 Bay Stallion, was consigned by Cheyenne Canyon Paints & Quarter Horses from Hot Springs, SD. The proven arena champion is sired by the proven Kenzy Ranch sire Annies Little Pepper by Peppy San Badger and out of a Doc's Hickory granddaughter. Steven Neil from Sedalia, CO, had the bid at $21,000 on the 2012 AQHA Region 2 Open All-Around Saddle Winner with Reserve Championships in NRCHA and ranch horse competitions. Boasting NRCHA earnings of $5,500+, he has also amassed 48.5 AQHA points in 5 events.
The popular Stallion Row was comprised this year of 24 of the region's leading American Quarter Horse Stallions. Up nine head over 2012, they were stalled in Rushmore Hall and previewed prior to the sale each afternoon. The stallion owners were given a prime opportunity to showcase their ranch stallions to the public and book 2013 breedings during the event.
