Permit Holder of the Year Challenge crowns new champions

LAS VEGAS — The future of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) made itself known at the 2015 Permit Holder of the Year Challenge presented by RAM Rodeo at the South Point Equestrian Center on Thursday, Dec. 3.

Five contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (heading and heeling), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding were invited from the permit holder standings. Membership in the PRCA starts when contestants buy their permits. When they earn $1,000 they are eligible to buy their card, but many compete on their permit for a second year and put their professional career on hold while they attend college and improve their skills. The next step is the Resistol Rookie of the Year award which they get one opportunity to win as a first year card holder. Then, they hope to be among the competitors at rodeo's Super Bowl, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR).

Cole Robinson from Moorecroft, Wyo., made the trip to compete for the second consecutive year and left with the same amount of championships. The tie-down roper won here last year and finished atop the leaderboard this year after roping and tying two calves in 17.6 seconds. That was worth $1,128, but more importantly, he got a new championship buckle and treated like a VIP at the competition.

Each of the contestants were given a package just for qualifying and competing. That included a vest with their name embroidered on it and rooms at the South Point. The winners not only got a paycheck; each one received a buckle.

In the team roping, the winners had never met or had a conversation prior to the rodeo. With Lane Karney, from Creston, Calif., doing the heading and Ty Romo from Whiteriver, Ariz., heeling, they won a first place check on the first steer they ever roped together. They placed third in the second round and won the overall championship by over two seconds.

"We actually met in the warm up pen," Romo said. "We told each other good luck, then just went and roped. It was awesome. This was my first year on my permit and I'm ready to get my card now. It was something I really wanted to win."
