19th Annual Casey Tibbs Match of Champions cancelled; branding event still on

For the first time in 19 years, due to the impending threat of flooding in the Pierre/Fort Pierre area, the Annual Match of Champions scheduled for Saturday, June 4 in Fort Pierre has been cancelled.

Although the Stanley County Fairgrounds may very likely be protected by the dike being built along the river front, the Board of Directors of the Casey Tibbs Foundation decided that due to the strain on the infrastructure of Fort Pierre with the increased amount of visitors and traffic into the area as well as the severity of the situation to the hundreds of families and businesses in Fort Pierre, it would be in the best interest of all to cancel the event.

Anyone who has purchased advanced tickets can choose either hold them until next year’s Match or bring them to the rodeo center to receive a refund.

Branding Event Will Be Held

Although the Match of Champions has been cancelled the Branding event will go on as planned Saturday, June 4th from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center in Fort Pierre. These branding gatherings allow ranchers and farmers the opportunity to embed their brand onto the walkway timbers of the rodeo center creating a true work of art.

With over 15,000 brands in the state and as more and more ranchers choose to showcase their brands, the significance of South Dakota ranching and ranch families will continue to be recorded and seen by visitors as well as future generations.
