The 5-State Breeders Barrel Futurity was created 11 years ago to promote stallions from South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and Nebraska. This year, 32 stallions were represented by an outstanding group of horses including nine different stallions by the 5-State Breeders Futurity Finalists.

In the first round, Dashing With Cash’s Raw Silver Tonto owned and ridden by Brenda Seely had the fastest time and earned $2,025 while Frenchman Guy’s French Cash Yawl ridden by Pamela Rolph earned $501 for winning the first round of the Maturity.

The sorrel stallion Dashers Red Jet by Hot Dasher piloted by Martee Pruitt won the second round of the Futurity. Crystal Shumate on Go For It French Girl by Frenchman’s Guy rallied to win the second round of the Maturity and also earned an additional $1,002 for winning the 5-State Maturity Average. Crystal outran a phenomenal group of Maturity horses to take home the championship saddle.

Ten amateur contestants competed for the 5-State Amateur saddle and $2,000. Shawna Letcher and Sparks Honey Bee by Smoke N Sparks topped the field to take home $800 and her first saddle.

While the short round horses rested for the final round, dozens of future 5-State barrel and rope horse contestants gathered for the Kevin Jaeger Horseshoeing Dummy Roping and the Northern Hills Homes Youth Barrel Race. Buckles were presented to the champions in each division of both events along with many other prizes donated by Deb Myers and Lori Shearer.

This year’s final futurity round consisted of 12 horses running in reverse order each with a fresh drag. Brenda Seely and Raw Silver Tonto were last to go and withstood the pressure to turn in the fast time of the finals and collect another $4,050 as they claimed the title of 2008 5-State Breeders Futurity Champion and a championship saddle.
