2010 Spirit of the West Dutch oven contest results

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Sunday, Sept. 19 dawned cloudy and cool as the Dutch oven enthusiasts rolled into the Spirit of the West Festival along the Banks of the Big Sioux River just north of Sioux Falls, SD. Setting up their camps amongst a dozen authentic chuck wagons from across the Midwest, these “black-pot” slingers prepared themselves to compete for thousands of dollars of cash and prizes. Prizes this year were sponsored by Cabelas; Rick’s Salt; Lazy RR Buffalo; Nyberg’s ACE; Lodge Cookware; Camp Chef; Colleen Sloans Log Cabin Grub; GSI Outdoors; Plums’s cooking, and more.

Eight categories allowed each to prepare their favorites dishes, and competition, as usual, was fierce. Our Judges were sponsored by Minvera’s, LLC and experienced food personalities – the most experienced team of judges we have had. The winners were:

Vegetable/side dish: 1. Cabbage and Corn by the Griffins of Dell Rapids, SD; 2. Sweet Potato Casserole by Jake Warner of Dell Rapids, SD; 3. Dutch Oven Potatoes by the Cauldwells of Brandon, SD; 4. Sweet Potatoes with Carrots by Suzanne Paige of Sioux Falls, SD.

Dessert: 1. Blueberry/Blackberry Rhubarb Pie with Cookies & Cream Ice Cream by the Sages of Yankton, SD; 2. Black Forrest Cake by Adam Johnsen of Sioux Falls, SD; 3. Apple Pie by the Griffins of Dell Rapids, SD; 4. Summer Blue Rhubarb Pie by the Cauldwells of Brandon, SD.

Chili/soup: 1. Tomato Dill Soup by the Cauldwells of Brandon, SD; 2. Chicken Fajita Corn Chowder by the Griffins of Dell Rapids, SD; 3. Avacado Soup by the Wes Stigen of Iola, WI.

Wild game: 1. Marinated Venison Loin by Dallas Dohlman of Magnolia, MN; 2. Stick to Your Ribs Goose Stew by the Sages of Yankton, SD; 3. Wild Goose with Wild Rice Stuffing by Suzanne Paige of Sioux Falls, SD; 4. Pheasant Casserole by the Cauldwells of Brandon, SD.
