2011 Black Hills Angus Association awards banquet highlights

The 2011 Black Hills Angus Association held their awards banquet Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 at the Ramkota in Rapid City, SD. The culmination of the evening was honoring the 2011 Business of the Year, West Tire and Alignment, Don and Delores West, Belle Fourche, SD; 2011 Black Hills Angus scholarship recipient, Kip Littau, Winner, SD; and 2011 Breeder of the Year, Millar Angus, Jon and Breezy Millar, Newell, SD.

Vaughn Meyer, Reva, SD, South Dakota American Angus Association delegate, gave an update on the association. Vern Frey, American Angus Association Regional Manager reported on the start of the 2011 bull sale season.

Black Hills Angus Association president A.J. Gabriel, Midland, SD, reminded guests that a new membership directory is in the works for 2012-2014. “To have your name and place on the map, you need to buy a three-year membership,” Gabriel reminded everyone. Work on the new directory will begin the summer of 2011.

In presenting the 2011 Business of the Year award, Black Hills Angus Association vice president Craig Kukuchka said, “There isn’t a business in the country that will take better care of you than West Tire.”

Mike Baker, Black Hills Angus Association scholarship chair, along with Seth Weishaar and Larry Stomprud, highlighted the many achievements of Kip Littau. “We’ve raised well over $30,000,” Baker said, with the help of the annual auction and donation items. “Six thousand dollars worth of scholarships have been given to date. The scholarship is $1,000, with an additional $1,000 renewal.”

Gabriel awarded the 2011 Breeder of the Year award to Jon and Breezy Millar, and said, “In our 10 years of having a sale together, we’ve never had a cross word between us, and I think that speaks a lot to their character.” Breezy’s parents were present for the award presentation, as was Jon and Breezy’s children Kobe and Ryle. Millar Angus also donated this year’s donation heifer, Lot 18, that will sell in the Jan. 31, 2011 Black Hills Stock Show Angus sale.
