Starla Lyon

South Dakota hosted the final high school regional competitions last weekend with rodeo action in Watertown, Dupree and Sturgis. The state high school finals will be held in Belle Fourche June 25-29.

Sturgis senior Daine McNenny qualified for state in both the team roping and tie down roping again this year. McNenny holds the state calf roping title from last year and hopes to retain it as he pursues his quest to the High School National Finals Rodeo.

“I just want to keep trying harder and hopefully hold on to my title,” said McNenny. “It’s been a lot of fun. I love rodeo. High school rodeo has helped me get ready for college and hopefully the PRCA some day.”

McNenny and his roping partner Gunnar Foss ended up placing fourth in the team roping and McNenny took the tenth hole in the calf roping in Sturgis.

Another timed event challenger who topped the charts is Troy Wilcox of Red Owl, SD. Wilcox won first in the calf roping and first in the team roping along with partner Dalton Kelly of Quinn. Wilcox will be a senior this year and attends high school in Sturgis.
