Black Hills Stock Show feature: Odie and Catherine West’s family includes three South Dakota rodeo queens

Doris Lauing

There has never been a time in history when South Dakota could boast that the three highest honors of rodeo queens have roots from the same family – let alone during the same time frame.

But Lowell “Odie” and Catherine West can claim just that. Granddaughter, Courtney Smith, was Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2009. Her sister, Hayley Smith, is South Dakota 4-H Rodeo Ambassador 2010. First cousin, Brielle Yackley, is Miss South Dakota High School Rodeo 2010. The queen’s mothers, Deanna and Christine, are both daughters of Odie and Catherine West.
