Black Hills Stock Show: Great American Cattle Drive is Jan. 27

For a true Old West experience, the Black Hills Stock Show (BHSS) will kick off their 10-day stock show with the Great American Cattle Drive and the Jim Thompson Cowboy Poetry Show on Thursday, Jan. 27.

“We wanted to provide an Old West experience very similar to the 1800s when they drove cattle from Texas up here,” says Ron Jeffries, BHSS general manager. “We will drive cattle from the Central States Fairgrounds to the Civic Center.”

The event is open to the public, and Jeffries encourages anyone who would like to mount up and ride along for the drive to call the fair office for a time to meet. The drive is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 27 at 3:30 p.m.

Currently, 20-30 Longhorns are planned for the drive, which will leave from the fairgrounds and travel south to Main, then down 5th to the Civic Center. If Longhorns are not available, they will use some Corriente cattle for the drive. Jeffries says the drive will take about an hour. The public is also welcome to view the progression from the sidewalk along the designated path the cattle will take.
