Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Horse Competition draws entries from 10 different states

The 2012 Merck Animal Health Ranch Horse Competition was held Jan. 29-30 at the Kjerstad Event Center, in Rapid City, SD, during the Black Hills Stock Show. With 151 entrants in seven divisions, competitors came from 10 states.

The family friendly event, for both competitors and spectators, has grown steadily and challenges horse and rider to do tasks similar to ranch work.

It’s various segments, from the dry work which includes dragging a log, crossing a wooden bridge, stepping over logs, opening and closing a gate, and simple reining maneuvers, to the cattle work, which includes sorting a yearling out of a group, putting it through a gate, then working it in the bigger arena, and in some divisions, roping it. It’s a fast paced test for both horse and rider.

Serving as judges for the event were Kevin Winter, Ericson, NE and Don Ulmer, Wessington Springs, SD.
