Bureau of Land Management: Fort Meade grazing allotments up for bid

BELLE FOURCHE, SD – The Bureau of Land Management is accepting sealed bids for the use of two grazing allotments in the Fort Meade Recreation Area during the 2011-2013 grazing seasons.

The grazing use is for cattle only.

Item 1 is the Bear Butte Allotment, which contains 2,990 acres. This area lies north of Highway 34 one mile east of Sturgis. It will provide 1,261 animal unit months of livestock forage. Use will be authorized for between 175 and 227 cattle depending on the weight of the cattle from May 15 to Oct. 30 of each year. All use will be in accordance with a rest-rotation allotment management plan.

Item 2 is the Fort Meade Allotment, which contains 2,790 acres. This area lies south of Highway 34 one mile east of Sturgis. It will provide 560 animal unit months of livestock forage. Use will be authorized for between 108 and 140 cattle depending on the weight of the cattle from June 1 to Sept. 30 of each year. All use will be in accordance with a rest-rotation allotment management plan.

To submit bids, mail or deliver to the BLM South Dakota Field Office: 310 Roundup Street, Belle Fourche, SD 57717.

All bids must be received by the BLM no later than 3 p.m. on March 15, 2011. The bid opening will start at 3:15 p.m. All bids are final and cannot be changed.

Field tours of the grazing allotments will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, and at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, beginning at the Fort Meade Campground. To reach the site take Exit 34 off Interstate 90; cross under the interstate and take the Scenic Byway one half mile northeast to the campground.
