April 14 was an emotional evening for Bernie Jassmann, Site Manager of the local Feeding South Dakota Food Bank. Feeding South Dakota hosted the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce April Business After Hours and received quite a shock from Midwest Cooperatives and Northern Plains Cooperatives. Midwest and Northern Plains donated $91,275.38 to the food bank thanks to food, grain and monetary donations from their patrons.

CHS, a multinational grain, foods, energy and agronomy company kicked off a two-week national food drive March 1-18. They called their food drive “Harvest 4 Hunger.” The goal was to raise 1,000,000 meals through all of the CHS country operations and ended up exceeding that by raising 2,000,000 meals to feed America’s less fortunate.

“I was left speechless,” said Jassmann. “It was very welcomed and much appreciated, and will definitely take some of the pressure off.”

Midwest Cooperatives General Manager Milt Handcock and Todd Oster decided to donate the $91,275.38 to Feeding South Dakota, but they aren’t stopping there. Altogether, CHS raised $397,272 and 314,162 pounds of food. CHS’s matching funds will be distributed next week to the local charities the business unit’s employees selected.
