Producing quality horses with Blue Valentine and Driftwood bloodlines have created a successful niche market for four breeders who decided 14 years ago to start an annual production sale. Chip Merritt, Randy Dunn, Dick VanPelt and Sam Shoultz are four friends who started an annual production sale to preserve Blue Valentine and Driftwood bloodlines.

“We cater to people looking for horses with a high percentage of Blue Valentine and Driftwood breeding and lots of color,” explains Dunn. “People who come to our sale are looking for everything from future prospects to breeding stock.”

Merritt says he recommends anyone considering a production sale to make sure they have quality horses, and then try to find a niche in order to sell them. Although all four partners have Blue Valentine horses, each has a slightly different program of how they breed the horses, and what they will be used for.

He cites Van Pelt’s breeding program as an example. Van Pelt crosses running blood horses on the Blue Valentines. When Van Pelt first started, he had more expense involved because he had to sell really broke horses in order to show what they could do.
