Deering’s Cheyenne Charolais 18th Annual Bull Sale

Dan Piroutek

Joel Deering with Neal Tolton, Midland, SD; Norval Millard, Presho, SD; and Auctioneer Seth Weishaar, Belle Fourche, SD.

Cheyenne Charolais, owned by Joel Deering and his family, hosted one of their best sales ever at Philip Livestock Auction. The weather was extremely cold on sale day morning, but the bulls presented themselves really well, despite the cold.

I felt like the top end of these bulls was as good as Cheyenne Charolais has ever presented. The dispositions of these bulls were excellent, and the hair quality on these bulls was about good as you ever see.

Each year the Deering family presents a producer of the year award, and the winner this year was the Norval Millard family of Presho, SD. This award includes either a $2,000 travel agency credit, or a $2,000 credit at next year’s bull sale.

Joel keeps the bulls free until May 1, and offers a first year breeding season guarantee.

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 1 at $4,750, selling to repeat buyer Ross Williams from Philip, SD. This son of 2TM Unlimited Justice 503 polled was out of a Norbert bred dam. Here was a big, stout, long-bodied bull with a tremendous amount of muscle all the way through. With an 85-lb. birth weight, he weaned at 667 lbs. to ratio 106. On test, he gained 5.43 lbs. per day to make a yearling weight of 1,535 lbs. His EPDs were +.0.4 BW, +31 WW and +45 YW.

Steve Thomas from Presho, SD, chose the Lot 18 bull at $4,250. He had an 81-lb. birth weight and a weaning weight of 724 lbs. to ratio 115. His EPDs were +0.7 BW, +27 WW and +36 YW. This bull was sired by CC Alicia’s Cigar 630 polled.
