Etbauer surpasses $3 million milestone

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – There is a certain irony to the fact that legendary saddle bronc rider Billy Etbauer reached one of the biggest milestones of his career in Burley, ID, a rodeo he doesn’t recall entering before and which he entered this time only because wife Hollie was competing there in the barrel racing.

Etbauer became just the second PRCA cowboy to surpass $3 million in career earnings – joining Trevor Brazile – when he rode Bar T Rodeo’s Paper Clip for 83 points and the win at the Cassia County Fair & Rodeo in Burley. It earned him $1,580 and put his career total at $3,000,856.

The five-time world champion needs a mere $478 to become the first rodeo cowboy to earn $3 million in a single event. (Etbauer has $1,334 in team roping money on his career resume.)

“I’m just glad to finally ride one,” Etbauer said. “I had really good horses at Caldwell (ID) and Gooding (ID) this weekend and couldn’t stay on. I’m tickled to death to finally reach ($3 million). Everybody else got me thinking about it. There wasn’t much to say. If I could have done it earlier, I would have.

“I just feel blessed to be healthy and able to do what I love.”

Etbauer is philosophical about what is almost certainly the end to his record 21 consecutive qualifications into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (he entered the week 42nd in the world, more than $27,000 out of the 15th and final qualifying spot).

“I had my chances,” he said. “I messed up with good horses at Salinas (CA) and Springdale (AR) and Caldwell. If I’d taken care of my end, the door would probably still be open. I’m just glad to be out on the road helping Hollie and the kids live their dreams. It’s a great life.”
