Marvin Garrett Roughstock Series breaks loose in 2008

Aaron Nelson

The Marvin Garrett Roughstock Series is set to be bigger and better in 2008 with added top cowboys, rank bucking stock, a bigger purse and prominent entertainment. The two-city series begins at the North Dakota Winter Show complex in Valley City, Oct. 3-4, with the finals to be held at the Pennington County Events Center in Rapid City, SD, Oct. 24-25.

The list of contestants increases this year with top PRCA cowboys competing in bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding. The featured list of bareback riders includes current PRCA World Standings leader Steven Dent of Mullen, NE, as well as Kelly Timberman, Bobby Mote, Ryan Gray, Heath Ford, Cody DeMers and Scott Montague.

The list of prominent bronc riders includes current #3 money earner JJ Elshere of Quinn, SD, as well as Red Lemmel, Chad Ferley, Jesse Bail, Jess Martin and Shaun Stroh.

Top bull riders include Brian Curtis, Fred Boetcher, Tate Stratton, Jay Dunford, Aaron Brewer and Cole Hermanson.

These cowboys will join other top riders in two halves of competition each night. Eight riders in each event will compete in the first half of the show. Following a break, the next eight riders in each event will compete. After the dust settles following the two-city tour, $45,000 in prize money will be split among the cowboy bounty and each event’s point leader will be crowned series champion.

“We’ve always had really good competitors,” said the four-time world champion bareback rider and Hall of Famer Marvin Garrett. “Now we got a lot more guys to add to that. There’s a whole group of guys from the west coast coming in. So the competition is going to be a lot stiffer.”

Garrett said they also have a decorated list of top contractors coming in.

“We’ve got several contractors involved including Powder River, Gold Buckle and Brookman Rodeo. Those guys have great stock and will be bringing all their NFR horses. Some of those horses have won world champion halters themselves. Chad Berger will handle all the bulls and he’s the PBR Contractor of the Year last year. Burch Rodeo will include stock in Rapid City.”

The announcers this year are Chad Nicholson, voice of the Belle Fourche Roundup, and Dale Christenson, who has been involved with past Marvin Garrett Roughstock Series events.

New to the Marvin Garrett Roughstock Series this year is entertainment following each night’s event. Nashville Star semi-finalist Brock Finn will entertain rodeo goers following the Valley City performances. CMT’s ‘Can You Duet’ finalists Joey Martin and Rory Feek will perform following each night of the Rapid City events.

Fans will also have the chance to win $500 in free fuel as every ticket purchased will be included in nightly drawings.

“We’re taking the series to the next level of competition and quality,” said Garrett. “It will be intense.”
