Carl D. Ogaard: 1932-2013

Carl Dean Ogaard, 81, longtime Belle Fourche, S.D., resident and businessman passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 at his home in Belle Fourche, following a lengthy illness.

He was born June 9, 1932, to Olaf and Marie (Selchert) Ogaard in Lodgepole, S.D. In 1945 the family moved to Lemmon, S.D., and Carl graduated from Lemmon High School in 1950.

Carl married Valerie Svihovec and they had four children together. They later moved to Belle Fourche. He remarried in 1961 to Dorothy Behrend and immediately added four children to his already sizeable family. Carl and Dorothy also had a daughter together.

Carl ran several successful businesses in Belle Fourche, including a service station and trailer sales. At one time he lived in Canada where he owned a trailer manufacturing business. He returned to Belle Fourche and opened Carl’s Trailer Sales, which is still in business today.

Carl was a volunteer fireman for many years and was a member of the Belle Fourche Lions Club and the Moose Lodge.

Through the years he enjoyed his friends, his dogs, his cars, music, artistry and laughter. He at times had his own “colorful” expressions of the English language, known to family as “Carlisms”.

He is survived by his daughters, Anita Ramey of Sacramento, Calif., Fran Ogaard of Woodworth, La., Peggy Neely of Casper, Wyo., and Mary Ogaard of Calgary, AB, Canada; sons, Jeff Ogaard of Rapid City, S.D., and Mike Ogaard of Woodworth, La.; step-sons, Vern Bills and Willard Potter, both of Belle Fourche; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Marie Ogaard; wife, Dorothy Ogaard; daughter, Laurie Ogaard and grandson, Kyle Ogaard.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Belle Fourche Moose Lodge.

Burial followed at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Moose Lodge, the Hospice of the Northern Hills or the Belle Fourche Volunteer Fire Department.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Tammy, Tamera and Lucy for their wonderful care of Carl.
