Roger Carlson: 1948-2012

Roger Carlson, age 64, of Wessington Springs, SD, passed away on August 27, 2012. He was born July 1, 2012, to Merle and Gertrude Carlson in Mitchell, SD.

Roger graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1966. After completing high school, Roger attended Wyoming Technical Institute, Laramie, WY and in 1968, graduated with a degree in Auto Mechanics. In 1972 he graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Agricultural Education from South Dakota State University.

Roger spent much of his life farming in Jerauld County. In addition to farming, Roger had an extensive career in education. He taught; Agriculture Education at LATI, Watertown, SD, Adult Farm Management, Wessington Springs, SD and Business Agriculture at MTI, Mitchell, SD. Roger had an outstanding and distinguished 40 year career teaching in South Dakota. He was loved and admired by all: from his colleagues and community members to parents, students and his family. He loved to learn and spent his life in that pursuit. He used his love for learning to help others reach their potential as businessmen, educators and administrators. His students knew him as having high expectations for them and they knew they could count on their interactions with him in class to be a fun and unique learning experience. He always had a positive attitude and the gift of a great sense of humor, which allowed him to find things to laugh about each day.

Although his love for teaching was unmistakable, Roger's true passion was his love of family and friends. He also enjoyed camping, traveling and riding his motorcycle in and around the Black hills of SD and attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Roger was diagnosed with leukemia in April of 2011, and with his positive attitude and great sense of humor, he was able to enjoy his last year with the people he loved most. Roger recently celebrated his 64th birthday open house in Mitchell and received a 40 year achievement award form the South Dakota Association Career and Technical Education Conference on July 30, 2012.

Roger is survived by Laura Kennedy the mother of his three children, Mike (Camile) Carlson, Denver, CO, Stephanie Engel, Moorhead, MN and Jason Carlson, St. Cloud, MN; his grandchildren Micheal 'Dillon' Carlson, Diego Romero, Isa Carlson, Sydney and Kylee Engel, Camdin Carlson, and 2 step-grandchildren, Rick and Michael Medina and special friend, Diane Lies, Plankinton, SD and her children, Tanner Grohs, Chanda Grohs and Shawna Stach.

He was preceded in death by his parents Merle and Gertude, an infant brother Eugene and infant sister Geraldine.
