Opening of major South Dakota beef plant delayed again
November 24, 2011
The opening of a long-delayed Northern Beef Packers plant near Aberdeen, SD has been pushed back. Northern Beef CEO David Palmer told The Aberdeen American News last week that the plant had been expected to open this year, but will now open later than Jan. 1. Palmer would not give a specific date.
The $100 million plant will slaughter 1,500 cattle per day and employ more than 600 workers when fully operational.
The land was secured for the plant in 2006. Construction had stalled, but the project received new life when a group of Korean investors took over in 2009. Palmer said the opening is a matter of weeks, not years. He told the newspaper the important thing is that the plant is making progress.
