Opponents of state GMO labeling plan will fly in 125 people

The Coalition for Safe Affordable Food, a food industry group that opposes state labeling laws on foods with genetically modified ingredients, is planning a fly-in of 125 people “across the food chain” from 20 states on Wednesday, Claire Parker, a spokeswoman for the group said today.

Parker also said she expects the Senate Agriculture Committee to hold a hearing on the issue in October.

The House has passed a bill that would establish a federal labeling system and ban state labels. Opponents say the federal system is inadequate.

Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., has written a bill to achieve the same goals, but has been unable to find a Democratic co-sponsor.
