Raffle, silent auction & unique painting proceeds to benefit Cathy Morrison

Alaina Mousel, Editor

In early 2011, Cathy Morrison, a pastor’s wife from Interior, SD, was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma. This type of cancer is commonly associated with lung cancer, but develops in cells lining glandular types of internal organs, such as the lungs, breasts, colon, prostate, stomach, pancreas and cervix.

Cathy’s husband, Dave, preaches in several local communities: Merriman, NE; Wall, SD; Interior, SD; and Rapid City, SD. He and his son, Nate, raise bucking horses and provide stock to several rodeos throughout South Dakota.

Through her involvement in the Merriman congregation, Lisa Weber, a custom leather craftsman from Nenzel, NE, learned of Cathy’s prognosis. Naturally, she wanted to help in any way she could.

“I don’t have a lot of money, but I thought I could donate a $200 gift certificate (to her business) and have a raffle,” Weber explained.

With that donation, she then reached out to Brad Montague with Star of the West Hat Company in Rapid City to help sell raffle tickets. Montague volunteered to donate a custom 20X hat for the raffle.

“Then people started really pitching in,” Weber added. With numerous contributions to help raise money for the Morrisons, Weber decided to have a silent auction at the Arthur Bowring Sandhills Ranch annual “Sod House Sunday” on June 26. Silent auction items include “something for everyone” Weber said – a saddle rack, antique oil lamps, syringes, jewelry. “One guy donated a bred heifer,” she added.

The Sod House Sunday event has drawn as many as 300 people, though the number has varied from year to year. The day-long event includes a church service at 11 a.m.; a chuck wagon lunch at noon; team penning and wagon rides. In addition to the silent auction being held at the event, the raffle drawing for the Star of the West custom-made hat and $200 gift certificate will be held after team penning.

Raffle tickets have been on sale since March. Weber estimates that she’s sold more than $500 worth of raffle tickets in the first two weeks, and estimates that $800-$1,000 have been raised so far. She’s unsure of the total dollar amount, since numerous individuals are selling tickets. Tickets are $1 each, or six for $5.
