Ranchers Choice Bull Sale

Scott Dirk
Sale hosts Judd Hoos, Don Vannatta and Matt Peters after a very successful Ranchers Choice bull sale.

S & V Livestock and Hooscow Angus teamed up again this year for the Ranchers Choice Bull sale held at Gordon Livestock Market in Gordon, NE, on March 8. This is the 3rd annual sale for S & V Livestock, Don and Mary Vannatta and Matt Peters, and Hooscow Angus, Judd and Brandy Hoos and family.

These operations run their cattle separately but share the same philosophies in what a cowherd should do and how they should be managed. Even though they are relatively new to the purebred business, both S & V and Hooscow are not necessarily new to the cattle business. Don Vannatta has been a procurement buyer for National Beef for nearly 30 years. Judd and Brandy Hoos purchased their first registered Angus fresh out of college in 1999. Matt Peters has been the herdsman and partner at S & V Livestock since the beginning of the registered herd in 1998. With the combination of experience and young go-getters, this sale is one to watch in the future.

This set of bulls were in good working condition; they had not been pushed and should be able to service cows in rough country and remain sound for several years. They were sired by some of the top artificial insemination (AI) sires in the Angus breed and were very well accepted by the big crowd on hand.

Topping the sale was Lot 6, Hoos Final Answer 003, a 1/31/10 son of SAV Final Answer 0035. This bull has EPDs of BW 1.3, WW 62, YW 117 and Milk 24, and is out of a very productive cow that weaned four calves with a 110 ratio. Malcolm Neilson and Larry Leisy, Ellsworth, NE, teamed up to purchase this herd sire prospect for $7,750.

Lot 54, SV Image 064, a 2/4/10 son of LAR Image 832 with EPDs of BW 0.6, WW 57, YW 97 and Milk 26, sold to George Shadbolt, Gordon, NE, for $6,500.

Neilson and Leisy teamed up again to purchase Lot 23, SV Power Box 052, a 2/10/10 son of HA Power Box 6708. This bull has EPDs of BW 2.0, WW 62, YW 99 and Milk 23, and sold for $5,750.

Lot 9, Hoos Final Answer 008, another SAV Final Answer, son sold at $5,500. This bull was born 2/1/10 and has EPDs of BW -0.1, WW 56, YW 93 and Milk 23, and sold to Roger Vincent, Rushville, NE.

Lot 19, Hoos Super Duty 036, a 2/9/10 son of Ideal 7773 of 332 3403 with EPDs of BW 2.4, WW 52, YW 108 and Milk 23, sold to Brad Heiting, Hay Springs, NE, for $5,500.

Also selling at $5,500 was Lot 35, Hoos Almighty 051, a 2/17/10 son of Marx Almighty 811 3KG. This bull was born 2/17/10, and has EPDs of BW 6.4, WW 54, YW 102 and Milk 23, and sold to Kevin Hebbert, Ashby, NE.

This was a very fast paced sale with several bidders on every lot. If you ever get to the Hay Springs, NE, area be sure to stop at the Bar J Steakhouse and let Don and Mary serve you one of the best steaks you will find anywhere.
