This was one of the warmest days of the spring so far, and Mogck & Sons Angus of Olivet, had their bulls all showcased out in sunny pens. It was easy to walk through the bulls, evaluating all aspects of these quality animals.

This was the second year in their new sale barn—one of the most beautiful sale barns that we’ve seen. A large crowd enjoyed the fellowship and meal provided by Charles and LeAndra Mogck.

The bulls were big and well-grown, out of one of the outstanding cow herds in South Dakota. Charles has produced several bulls that are in bull studs across the country, as well as several herd bulls that are serving in purebred herds. Charles travels the area during marketing season to bid on many of the calves produced by customers who use Mogck bulls.

The top selling bull of the day was Lot 30, selling for $28,000 to Pfaff Angus of Bonesteel, South Dakota. Mogck Tanker 305 was sired by MAF Tanker 23, and out of a daughter of Connealy Final Solution. This bull had growth, as he hit the ground at 79 pounds and grew to a weaning weight of a whopping 959 pounds to ratio 119. He had EPDs of BW 1, WW 80 MILK 26, and YW 133. His $Beef score was $140.12.

Lot 72 found a new home at Varilek Angus, Geddes, South Dakota. He was sired by KCF Bennett Absolute and out of a daughter of Connealy Hemisphere 957L. Born at 90 pounds, he weaned at 904 pounds to ratio 112. With a 14.9 square inch rib eye, he had EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 62, MILK 21, MARB 0.66, YW 118, and $B 152.82. This good bull sold for $18,000.

Haugen Cattle Co. of Hannaford, North Dakota, selected Lot 34 at $15,500. This good looking, thick bull posted the third heaviest weaning weight at 948 pounds to ratio 118, and was sired by MAF Tanker 23. His EPDs were BW 1.9, WW 83, MILK 29, YW 132, and RE 0.54.

After some active bidding, Mark Dexter, Amelia, South Dakota, made the final bid of $12,000 to own Lot 31. Here was another son of MAF Tanker 23, and he was 86 pounds at birth, before weaning at 942 pounds. His dam is a first calf heifer with the grandma and great-grandam as Pathfinders. His EPDs were BW 2.3, WW 80, MILK 30, and YW 136.

Jerry Bush, Pierre, South Dakota, liked Lot 1, a son of Mogck Bullseye and out of a daughter of Connealy Mentor 7374. He had a 15.2 square inch rib eye, EPDs of BW 1.6, WW 67, MILK 32, and YW 116, and sold for $10,000.

Also at $10,000, was Lot 19, with his new owner being Dennis Koerner from Freeman, South Dakota. His pedigree was Mogck Frontman 1141 x Connealy Final Solution. This heifer bull was 73 pounds at birth, weaned at 860 pounds, and posted EPDs of BW -2.0, WW 56, MILK 30, and YW 101.

The top bred heifer, Lot 118, went to Josh Lundberg from Ft. Scott, Kansas for $9,000. She was sired by Rito 919 of Rita 5F56 6I6 and bred to Styles Cash R24, due March 12.

The top bred cow, Lot 145, sold for $4,500 to Points West Angus at Barnesville, Minnesota. She was sired by Mogck Sure Shot, going back to Mytty in Focus, and bred to Connealy Earnan 98L.

This is always a special sale for me as I’ve been at this sale for more years than any of the other bull sales.
