San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo to add steer roping in 2011

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, which will light up the AT&T Center Feb. 3-20, will feature every Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) event for the first time in 2011, including steer roping. San Antonio is the first indoor rodeo of its size to have every PRCA event.

“In honor of the PRCA’s 75th anniversary, we wanted to have every event the PRCA offers,” said San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Executive Director and CEO Keith Martin, who also serves as Chairman of the PRCA Board. “And we always like to do everything we can think of to help the contestants here in San Antonio.”

The steer roping will feature the same $131,000 added money as each of the other events ($262,000 for headers and heelers in the team roping). And contestants pay no entry fees or stock charge in San Antonio.

The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo has been named PRCA Large Indoor Rodeo Committee of the Year five years running, and recently stepped up as a sponsor of the 2010 Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping, which will run Nov. 5-6 at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK.

After his dramatic win in the steer roping at the centennial Pendleton (OR) Round-Up, Cody Ohl said that the main reason he entered there – ending a decade away from steer roping – was that, “I knew San Antonio had added steer roping for 2011, and they’re paying the same amount of money as they do for the other events.

“It’s not very good business to not catch there when they’re adding that kind of money. Next year, I’ll go at it a little harder and try to make the finals (NFSR) too.”
