South Dakota: Days of ’76 Museum launches final phase of fundraising for new facility

DEADWOOD – Supporters of Deadwood’s Days of ’76 Museum have nearly reached the goal of $5.25 million to complete the new facility. The new museum – currently under construction at its former site near the Days of ’76 Rodeo Grounds and Campground in Deadwood – is $600,000 shy of its total project goal. Museum officials said the building is on schedule to be completed in 2011, with collection installation and exhibits completed in time for its grand opening scheduled for June 2012. Museum board members and staff have launched the final phase of its capital campaign to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the exhibit displays and other components.

The new museum, complete with climate controlled exhibit space and artifact and archive storage is necessary to save the museum’s important collections. These collections include the Clowser Collection of important Old West and American Indian art, artifacts and archives; history of the ProRodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) award-winning Days of ’76 Rodeo and its PRCA Hall of Fame inducted committee; the extensive Days of ’76 Carriage Collection used in the annual parade, and the Centennial Clothing Collection. Additional funding is needed to complete fabrication and installation of exhibits and displays, audio visual equipment for both exhibits and public areas, landscaping, exterior lighting and signage, a “Walk of Champions” and furniture, equipment and other items necessary to enhance the visitor’s experience and properly tell the museum’s story.

“The response of our fundraisers has been outstanding and we have almost reached our goal. There is some work yet to do, but we are confident we’ll be able to open the new museum’s doors on schedule,” said Jon Mattson, president of the Days of ’76 Museum Board of Directors. “Not only will this museum house extremely important history, it will be of great value to area businesses and communities. This will be a first-class attraction, resulting in new visitors, giving families and visitors to the Hills a reason to stay longer, and offering area residents, students and future generations a rich cultural resource.”
