South Dakota governor Mike Rounds wants to build biotech animal research center

South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds said he wants to build a new biotech animal research facility in the state. He made the announcement during the Livestock Biotech Summit, held in Sioux Falls, Sept. 28. News reports said the summit is the first national industry-wide conference on genetically-engineered animal technologies, and drew about 200 persons from as far as South Korea and New Zealand.

“Because biotech is so important in creating disease-free animals, South Dakota is taking the first steps in building a new biotech animal research facility,” Rounds said. He said the proposed facility is in the conceptual design phase, and he asked conference attendees for their input on how it should be developed. A location, construction timeline and cost for the project have not been announced.
