Summitcrest Performance Angus 33rd Annual Spring Bull Sale

Scott Dirk

Corey Sargent and Lonnie Lesner of Valentine, NE, are long-time repeat Summitcrest bulls buyers. They purchased several bulls again at the 2011 sale.

Summitcrest Angus hosted their annual spring bull sale at the ranch near Broken Bow, NE, on March 21. This was the 33rd annual sale for the Johnson Family. Brothers Fred H. “Sam” Johnson III and Jeff Johnson, along with their families, presented a very nice set of bulls to the good-sized crowd of buyers on hand.

The Summitcrest bulls excel in carcass quality. Some of the top carcass herd sires in the Angus breed originated from this herd. The bulls are developed in large lots that allow bulls to get plenty of exercise and remain structurally sound. Bulls are performance-tested for feed efficiency and really looked the part on sale day, with plenty of thickness and eye appeal. The bulls were displayed nicely at the sale facility. In order to put less stress on the bulls, they were not run through the sale ring, but sold via closed circuit video to a large crowd of buyers on hand and over the telephone conference call.

Topping the sale was Lot 112, Summitcrest Darth 0X19, a 1/1/10 son of Summitcrest Darth 1S37 with EPDs of BW -0.4, WW 66, YW 112 and Milk 25. This herd sire prospect had an 800-lb. 205-day weight and 1,388-lb. 365-day weight. Good Cattle Co., Wheatland, WY, was the buyer at $10,000.

Lot 148, Summitcrest Complete 3X58, a 1/3/10 son of Summitcrest Complete 4U75, sold to P & H Cattle Co., Salem, OH, for $9,500. This bull has EPDs of BW 0.2, WW 53, YW 99 and Milk 28.

Long-time repeat buyer, Wm. Zutavern Cattle Co., Dunning, NE, purchased the next top-selling bull at $8,350. Lot 87, Summitcrest Focus 01X8, is a 1/7/10 son of Summitcrest Focus 2U66 with EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 58, YW 116 and Milk 25.

Zutavern also purchased Lot 123, Summitcrest Darth X002, a 1/7/10 son of Summitcrest Darth 1S37 with EPDs of BW 2.7, WW 57, YW 115 and Milk 20, for $7,500.
