Top PRCA contestants headed for Deadwood’s Days of ’76

DEADWOOD, SD – The competitor’s stage is set for the 88th annual Days of ’76 Rodeo in Deadwood. More than 500 of the top PRCA contestants will converge on Historic Deadwood to compete July 27-31, 2010. Trevor Brazile, PRCA’s current top all-around cowboy in the world standings and the 2009 all around and calf roping champion, will be at the Days of ’76 to compete. Brazile, from Decatur, TX, will compete in steer roping, and will be joined by a host of other top all-around cowboys, including Trell Etbaurer of Goodwell, OK, Josh Peek of Pueblo, CO, Landon McClaugherty of Tilden, TX and Camp Crook, SD’s Jesse Bail.

The Days of ’76 Rodeo won the Small Rodeo of the Year Award from 1998-2001, and has taken home PRCA’s Medium Rodeo of the Year honors each year since 2004.

This year’s Days of ’76 Rodeo kicks-off at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27 with PRCA steer roping, and the event will include 19 of the top 20 steer roping leaders in current standings. This will include current world standing leaders Rocky Patterson of Pratt, KS and Bryce Davis of Abilene, TX, and champions Brazile, Scott Snedecor, Buster Record, Bryce Davis and Guy Allen. Allen, a Santa Anna, TX cowboy, has won Deadwood’s Days of ’76 three times and this year will be joined by a total of 82 other steer ropers, including tri-state area ropers J.R. Olson, Cody Taton, Coy Thompson, Jay Mattson and Jesse Tierney.

Slack begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 28 and will feature nine of the top 20 PRCA cowboys in steer wrestling, six of the top 20 cowboys in tie-down roping and eight of the top 20 team roping teams. The steer wrestlers will be led by current World Champion leader Curtis Cassidy from Alberta. The team roping will be led by Turtle Powell of Stephensville, TX and Cory Petska of Lexington, OK. Past world champion Stran Smith of Childress, TX will lead the tie down roping event. All of the timed event cowboys will compete again either in the July 28, 8 a.m. slack or the July 29, 30 or 31 Days of ’76 performances.

Mickey Downare of Hartsel, CO, leads the list of bareback riding competitors. South Dakota cowboys Scott Montague and Dustin Reeves are having a great year so far in bareback, and will attempt to ride their way into the top 20 during the Days.

In Deadwood’s Days of ’76 premiere event, saddle bronc riding, 10 of the top 20 cowboys are entered, including Buffalo, SD’s Bryce Miller and Quinn, SD’s J.J. Elshere, who’s a past NFR average winner. Joining them are fellow South Dakotans Cody Taton, from Newell, who is also in the top 20 for saddle bronc riders, and past world champion, Chad Ferley from Oelrichs. Other popular cowboys competing in the saddle bronc include Jesse Bail of Camp Crook and Red Lemmell of Faith.

The bull riding will be led by the leader in bull riding standings Shawn Hogg of Odessa, TX. He’ll be joined by top bull riders Ardie Maier from Timber Lake, SD, and past world champion J.W. Harris of Mullen, TX.

In barrel racing, the top four racers will compete in Deadwood, including Lindsay Sears of Nanton, Alberta, Tana Poppino of Big Cabin, OK and Brittany Pozzi of Victoria, TX. Sixth-ranked Lisa Lockhart from Oelrichs, SD and 7th-ranked Jill Moody of Letcher, SD will also race.

Virtually all of the top Badlands Circuit cowboys and cowgirls are also signed on to compete in Deadwood in order to qualify for the Circuit Finals, which will be held in October in Minot, ND.
