U.S. Targhee National Show & Sale

The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association’s (USTSA) National Show and Sale will be held in Arlington, WI, July 15-17.

Guests can tour the Arlington Sheep Unit and learn about Wisconsin sheep production.

The National Open Show will be judged by longtime USTSA friend Larry Mrozinski of San Pierre, IN. The Junior show judge is Tim Miller of Beloit, WI. Tim and wife Beth raise Rambouillet sheep and working Border Collies. The Wool Show judge is Mary Wallace of Cambridge, WI, who is the Superintendent of the Fleece Shows at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival.

Another highlight of the 2010 National Show and Sale will be the awarding of the second Targhee Starter Flock to a deserving youth. An outstanding array of applications was received in early April.

National Show and Sale events begin at 8 a.m., Thursday, July 15, when sheep begin arriving. All sheep must be in the barn along with necessary paperwork by 3 p.m. when sifting commences. At 7 p.m. a picnic will be held at the UW Sheep Unit house followed by a tour of the Arlington Sheep Unit facilities.

On July 16, the National Junior Show starts at 9 a.m. with the National Open Show following at 1 p.m. Yearling rams, ram lambs, yearling ewes, ewe lambs, and pens of two yearling ewes and ewe lambs will be shown. National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP) classes will also be offered. In these classes yearling rams and ewes will be evaluated on their Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and physical appearance.

Additional events for public viewing on July 16 include the National Wool Contest and a Photo Contest highlighting memorable Targhee moments. The annual membership meeting follows after the Open Show at 3 p.m. A USTSA Banquet and Benefit Auction will be held at 7 p.m. at the Comfort Inn for adults with a pizza and pool party for junior members. The sheep sale begins Saturday, July 17 at 11 am. All animals shown in the National Open Show will be available for purchase at the sale.
