USDA undersecretary Avalos leaving

Agriculture Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Ed Avalos will leave USDA on September 17, a spokesman for Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack confirmed today.

Avalos is one of the longest serving undersecretaries, having joined the Obama administration in October 2009. Divisions under his supervision have included the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the Agricultural Marketing Service and the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration.

Avalos grew up on a family farm in the Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico. Before his appointment at USDA, he served as director of marketing and development at the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.

Avalos has not announced future plans and USDA has not announced who will succeed him, although Communications Director Matt Herrick said the appointment is expected to be internal.

“As with any vacancy this late in an administration, we will look at internal candidates to ensure continuity in our operations and continued focus on our priorities,” Herrick said.
