Weller Ranch 28th Annual Production Sale

Dan Piroutek

The Weller Ranch, owned by Bill and Carrie Weller and their family, along with W.O. and Jean Weller, hosted a huge crowd for their annual production sale at Philip Livestock. The Wellers also hosted an offering of bred heifers from neighbors and friends, the Pritchards and the Wieman Bros. ranches that are using Weller genetics.

The weather on sale day was in the 70s and was a “God send” as this area, and particularly the south, had seen a very violent winter storm in the days prior to the sale.

The sale started off with a bang as they offered the females, and they were extremely well received. The top draft of females, bred for February calves, brought $1,450. A draft of the March calves brought $1,375 and 29 April calvers brought $1,350.

The top selling bred heifers fetched $1,235 a head and came from the Weiman Bros. herd at Marion, SD. These good heifers were purchased from the Wellers as calves and were AI’d to the Weller Ranch herd bull, Sitz Bull Durham 9935. His EPDs are +1.7 BW, +43 WW, +14 Milk, +104 YW, and +.32 MB.

Cleve Prichard from Kadoka, SD had a nice string of bred heifers that were AI’d to Bull Durham. They brought $1,060.

The top selling bull of the day was Lot 50, a fall-born Red Angus bull. Tom Marshik of Lusk, WY took him home for $3,800. This 9-18-07 bull, sired by SHMM Chief 136N, had EPDs of +0.4 BW, +32 WW, +14 Milk, and +54 YW. His 39 cm. scrotal went with a 72 pound birth weight and a 700 pound weaning weight. He had an IMF scan of 4.84 to ratio 138.
