Fielding Phillips, Gorsuch steer wrestling clinic, Double J Horse Sale, Korkow Rodeo school, Hall cowhorse clinic
I’m seeing quite a few baby calves around the country and it’s been pretty fine weather for their arrival. Of course, there have been a few days when it was so windy that they couldn’t stand up, but it sure dries them off quickly! I saw a photo on Facebook of a set of twin Char cross bull calves weighing in at 87 and 93 pounds! I’ll bet that old cow was glad to get them on the ground and quit packing them around. I enjoy calving season and think baby calves are awfully cute, but am content to wait until the end of April for ours. I enjoy tagging calves while the meadowlarks sing.
I was saddened to hear of the loss of a great roper, fine person and wonderful friend to all who knew him. Fielding Phillips, 78, passed away on Feb. 20 in Denver. He roped and won at every level of competition and trained many good rope horses along the way. What I’ll remember most about him though, was how much fun he was to visit with. He always had some wise observation to make and a good laugh would follow. My condolences to his fiancée Peggy Brengle, his sons, brothers and grandkids. I know many of his friends will miss him terribly too. Those good ones are a treasure. Services for Fielding will be held at a later date and I’ll sure try to let you know when that will be.
This is coming up right away, so pay attention! There will be a Dean Gorsuch steer wrestling clinic on March 4-6 at Curtis, Neb. Hosted by the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Rodeo Team, the clinic will include chute preparation, horsemanship technique, bulldogging style and other basics. Dean is a two time World Champion in the PRCA and a mighty fine fellow, so it should be a great clinic. You can call NCTA rodeo coach Bridger Chytka at 308-367-5284 to learn more.
The Double J Horse Sale has announced the date for their All Breeds Consignment Horse Sale at Dickinson, N.D. The sale will be Saturday, May 14 at Stockmen’s Livestock. Consignment deadline is March 21 and consignment sheets can be obtained by going on-line at http://www.doublejhorsesales.com, find the Double J site on Facebook, or call Joe at 701-230-3044 or John at 701-720-6674.
The 31st Annual Korkow Ranch Rodeo Clinic will be April 22-24 at the ranch at Pierre, S.D. There will be bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, bull fighting and junior bull riding taught by some of the very finest rough stock riders in the business today. Cost for each event is $280, except for the junior bulls which will be $200. There’s a $50 deposit due by April 14. Anyone who wants to learn from the best and get started the right way should really attend one of these schools. It’s a great place for high school age kids to get the right start too. You can find out more at http://www.korkowrodeos.com, call Jim Korkow at 605-224-5607, or email him at email@example.com.
The National Circuit Finals Steer Roping will be held at Torrington, Wyo. on April 29-30. This would be a top end steer roping to go watch I’m sure. I’d love to go to it one day but we are always calving by then.
The spring cow horse clinic at Kirk and Shelly Hall’s place will be May 20-22 at their ranch near Edgemont, S.D. They should have their nice new barn finished by then, so it will be great weather whether it’s raining or not! They’ll have plenty of cattle to work and will be helping people to learn the basics and on up to more polished work. Kirk is a many times AQHA World Show qualifier in the working cow horse and puts on a great clinic. Cost for the clinic is $450 with $150 deposit to hold your spot. Besides the clinic there will be supper and music on Saturday night! You can call Kirk at 605-431-3607 for more information.
By the way, the very nice horses belonging to the very nice people along the highway are now halter free out in the pasture. I sure feel better when I drive by there now.
Be sure and send me your upcoming events, with several weeks lead time so I can get it in here in time. I would love to share it here! Have a wonderful, less windy, week.
