Ladies compete for Miss Rodeo North Dakota title

Four young women are competing to become Miss Rodeo North Dakota during the 61st Annual Miss Rodeo North Dakota Pageant to be held Oct. 8-11 in Minot. The annual pageant is held in conjunction with the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo for the top professional contestants from North Dakota and South Dakota.

Pageant contestants are Miss Rodeo North Dakota Winter Show Elise Burwell, 19, Wyndmere; Miss Rodeo Prairie Rose Megan Haag, 21, Linton; Miss Rodeo Mandan Courtney Klever, 21, Napoleon; and Miss Rodeo Minot Y's Men Shamee Merkel, 24, Ellendale.

Contestants compete in the areas of personality, appearance and horsemanship. Several pageant activities are open to the public. Contestants will present platform speeches, model western clothing, answer impromptu questions and participate in an interview during a brunch scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Grand Hotel. The cost to attend is $15 in advance or $18 at the door.

Horsemanship will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the State Fair Center arena. Admission is free.

Contestants will present speeches about North Dakota, model fur and leather coats and clothing from western merchandisers, plus answer more impromptu questions about current events and the sport of rodeo during a lunch on Saturday, Oct. 10 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Grand Hotel. The cost is $25 in advance or $28 at the door.

The winner begins her term of service in January 2016 and will compete in the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in December 2016 during the Nationals Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

The new queen will be crowned by Miss Rodeo North Dakota 2015 Dani Taylor, Mandan. She will compete in the Miss Rodeo American Pageant this December in Las Vegas.

Miss Rodeo North Dakota promotes and assists with rodeos and other events throughout North Dakota and serves as an ambassador at numerous rodeos throughout the country.
