N.D. requiring ICVI due to surge in VS
The North Dakota State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) is reminding the public that livestock entering North Dakota from any state under quarantine for vesicular stomatitis are required to be accompanied by an Interstate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (ICVI), importation permit number and vesicular stomatitis statement.
“This season, outbreaks of vesicular stomatitis have been confirmed in animals in Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming,” said State Veterinarian Dr. Susan Keller. “Livestock entering North Dakota from these states must meet more stringent importation requirements.”
North Dakota livestock owners who take horses or other livestock to a state affected with vesicular stomatitis for exhibition, competition or trail riding and then return must also meet these requirements.
Permits may be obtained by calling the North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Animal Health division at 701-328-2655. The importation permit number is given to the veterinarian issuing the ICVI.
Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease that primarily affects horses and cattle but can also affect swine, sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas and cervids. Clinical signs include excessive salivation, and blister-like lesions on the lips, gums, tongue, teats and nostrils. Lameness and severe weight loss may follow.
Transmission factors include biting insects, sharing of feed, water and equipment, and also direct contact with infected animals. Although rare, vesicular stomatitis may cause flu-like illness in people who are in direct contact with affected animals.
Vesicular stomatitis is a reportable disease in North Dakota. Call the state veterinarian at 701-328-2655 if you discover, suspect or have reason to believe your animals are infected.
The most current list of states affected with vesicular stomatitis can be found at http://www.nd.gov/ndda/disease/vesicular-stomatitis.
