Oakwater Ranch & Rocking Arrow brought a stout set of yearling Charolais bulls to town for their 33rd Annual bull sale held April 12, 2016 at Valentine Livestock Auction, Valentine, Nebraska.
The Oakwater/Rocking Arrow program is based on performance cattle and balanced trait selection with added emphasis on calving ease. The focus of the Oakwater breeding program is to maintain above breed average for growth traits while providing calving ease. I would say they are on the right track with 14 percent above the average for weaning, 3 percent above on yearling while milk is 34 percent above and total maternal is 21 percent above. But birthwieght is 2.5 times below the average for the Charolais breed.
There was very active bidding on all lots giving Oakwater/Rocking Arrow one of their best ever sales. The sale was very steady from start to finish with no extreme tops and bulls selling in prices to fit all budgets. These cattle will perform in the feedlot, and you won't have to baby-sit them at calving time. Most of the bulls in the sale were sired by home raised Oakwater Ranch bulls. The disposition of this set of bulls was outstanding, most of the bulls had to be almost hand pushed into and out of the sale ring.
Topping the sale was lot 60, OW Impressive 5178 Pld, a Feb. 2015 son of OW Impressive U502 Pld that had a 205 day weight of 813 pounds, ratio 121, yearling weight of 1,375 pounds, ratio 113 and EPDs of BW -0.1 WW 43 YW 68 Milk 15 MTL 36. RCG Cattle, Tompkinsville, Kentucky, was the buyer at $10,250.
