Outside Circle by Jan Swan Wood: EHV-1 at Odessa, PRCA cowboys laid up, stolen horse in Montana, fund for Ben Wrzesinski
I’m sure you’re all heading for the stock show in the coming days. There’s always so much to see and do, but my favorite part is getting to see so many people who I don’t get to see much the rest of the year. That time to visit is the icing on the cake for me and I’m sure, for many others. Have fun and drive safe!
If you or someone you know was at the Sand Hills Stock Show and Rodeo at Odessa, Texas with horses on January 6-8, you need to know that a team roping horse that was there has tested positive for the neurological form of EHV-1. The Texas Animal Health Commission has issued the warning and you need to take it seriously. Be watching your horse for any changes in behavior, listlessness and so on, as EHV-1 can be fatal and is highly contagious. If you want to know more, go to http://www.tahc.texas.gov/…/USDA Brochure_Equine Biosecurity.
Ty Breuer, Mandan, North Dakota, PRCA bareback rider, was injured at Denver. He fractured his wrist and his thoracic spine. He will likely miss both Ft. Worth and San Antonio while he recovers. Also out of commission is Beau Hill, W. Glacier, Montana, who was injured in the bull riding at the RAM Montana Circuit Finals. He separated some ribs so will be taking small breaths and healing up for a while.
A stolen horse report from Choteau, Montana is rather puzzling. The broodmare, heavy with foal, vanished from the pasture of RQF Performance Horses Jan. 10. Eight other horses in the pasture are all accounted for. Why anyone would steal a broodmare is what puzzles me. As good as this mare is, she has little monetary value without her registration papers or the possibility of registering the foal she is carrying. The only thing I can figure is that the thief knew the mare and perhaps has a set of papers with DNA testing already on them, that would match the mare for color and markings. Keep your eyes peeled for any additions to someone’s horse herd that matches the mare’s description. She is a very nicely made dark seal brown, almost black, with one high sock on her right hind foot and no white on her face. If you think you might know something, please call 406-590-8558. A mule was stolen under similar circumstances in that same area last year.
There’s a GoFundMe account set up for Ben Wrzesinski, Boulder, Montana, who was kicked in the face by a horse on Jan. 19. He was lifeflighted to Seattle where he underwent six hours of surgery to begin repairs. He has a fractured skull, jaw, sinuses, cheek bones, eye sockets, and nose. He is a PRCA bareback rider and pickup man and qualified for the Montana Circuit Finals 20 times. Ben is 44 and he and his wife Kirsten have two grown kids. The travel and surgery expenses are going to be pretty overwhelming, so if you feel it in your heart to help these folks you can go to http://www.gofundme.com/ben wrzesinski. If you aren’t on the computer, I can come up with an address for you to send a check directly to them too.

There was another round of snow in the area, but not as much as last week’s. I probably got 2-3 inches here. It’s sloppy wet and soaking in. Every drop is welcome.
