Outside Circle by Jan Swan Wood: Nield wins women’s bronc riding, Lisa and Louie back on the road, Larry Larson clinic
It’s a windy day here on Dry Creek. I’m hoping that some of the shingles that blew off last weekend will return to their place on the porch roof. I’ll let you know how that turns out.
The elections are finally behind. It’s safe to turn on the TV and radio again and the phone is so silent I was wondering if it was even working. I’m happy with how the election went, candidate-wise. Some of the issues we voted on didn’t go the way I’d hoped, but that’s the way it usually is. What a privilege it is to vote. I hope the newly elected people will also view the job we’ve elected them to as a privilege as well.
I had a great trip to the Dakota 50/50 Futurity and Sale in Fargo. It’s always fun to reconnect to the nice people at that sale and to see all the pretty weanlings go through the ring. It’s sure a good thing I didn’t have a trailer along or I would have blown my 12 step program and bought one or six of them! My traveling companion was my cousin Sandy who made the whole trip even better. She didn’t buy a colt either but she had her husband believing she had until bedtime that night! That about winds up the weanling sales for the year in our region.
The country between here and Fargo all looks great. There’s sure lots of hay still needing stacked, corn is being harvested and it appeared that the sunflower harvest was just starting. I also saw a bunch of pheasant hunters out and about with their families and happy dogs. I almost got a nice pheasant with the windshield of my car but he veered off in time. Good thing as I didn’t have a tag.
Congratulations to McKay Nield from Afton, Wyoming for winning the WSRRA Finals World Champion Women’s Bronc Riding in Winnemucca, Nevada. I saw the ride on video and she covered a pretty rank bronc for the win.
It looked as though Lisa Lockhart, Oelrichs, South Dakota, was going to be back on her good Louie gelding for the Canadian National Finals that were this past week. He had been healing up from an injury and is now legged up and ready to run again, which I’m sure is a huge relief for Lisa in many ways. This also means that she’ll be mounted on him for the WNFR in December.
