Roping clinic, team penning/sorting clinic, cow horse clinic, barrel and pole jackpot, steer wrestling memorial

We're still not calving here as of this writing. The cows are getting closer but have sure overshot their April 10 starting date! I'm not minding a bit. They can stay on their winter pasture and graze a little longer this way. I think I know what caused the holdup though. I had all the calf tags done in advance and they were all ready to go. I usually don't do them until at least one calf is on the ground. That explains it for sure.
There are a few heeling spots available for the Bobby Harris roping clinic that will be May 14-15 at the Clayton Graham Arena, Baker, Montana. The cost is $400 and is a good clinic for everyone, including beginners. Call 406-480-5745 for more information.
Marion, North Dakota is the place to be for a team penning/ranch sorting clinic that will be held at the Bear Creek Ranch on May 14. It will start at noon and will feature horsemanship, cattle handling and more. It's a family oriented event and is suited for beginners on up. Sponsored by the Sheyenne Valley Team Penning association, the cost is $100/one person, $150/two, and $200/three. Call Dennis Knutson at 701-6692321 or Jarod Hause at 701-541-5542 for more information. You can get a schedule of upcoming team penning and sorting events in that area at http://www.sheyennevalleyteampenning.org.
There's still time to get your name in the hat for the Hall Performance Horses Spring cow horse clinic, Edgemont, S.D. It will be held May 20-22, rain or shine, and the cost is $450 with a $50 discount for high school or college students. Kirk and Shelly have a brand new indoor arena, so no matter the weather, the clinic will go on. You will learn how to establish better body control, work the flag, work out of the herd, and go down the fence. A potluck lunch will be held each day and horses can be kept right there. Call Kirk at 605-431-3607 to reserve your spot. You can check out their program at http://www.hallperformancehorses.com.

The Professional Indian Horse Racing Association has set the date for the All Nations Indian Relay Championships at Billings, Montana. It will be September 22-25 at the Metrapark. It should be there for the next three years, same dates, same place. There are 16 sanctioned races already to qualify for the event. That is definitely on my bucket list! Who wants to go with me?
I see that the National Junior High School Finals will be moving to Huron, S.D. for the 2017-18 seasons. That's great news! There's a really good facility there that can handle the large entry of a finals. The National High School Finals have been held there in the past and Huron did a great job.
I read this morning that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering vaccinating prairie dogs in two locations in northeastern Montana against sylvatic plague. They want to grow the prairie dog population in order to support the endangered black footed ferret which preys on the prairie rodents. There's a comment period wherein we can express our opinion of the proposal. I don't think they want to hear my opinion very bad. I've been trying to help though! I've been "vaccinating" prairie dogs with .223 rounds for years now!
Well, that's my circle for the week. Send me your news items and I'll share them here!
