Scheer has opportunity to win first Fort Worth Buckle
FORT WORTH, Texas — Saddle bronc rider Cort Scheer did something at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Wednesday and Thursday night that he has never done before.
He rode two horses for over 80 points each and has moved into second place in the overall standings with a total of 164 points. Jake Wright from Milford, Utah, is in first place with a total of 166.5 points.
Scheer, from Elsemere, Neb., rides very well and has had some opportunities here in the past. It just never came together for him like it did this year for the five-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier.
“I’ve gotten on some decent horses here before,” he said. “But never two like I did this year.”
Scheer was 80.5 points on Universal Pro Rodeo’s Tin Man Wednesday. The second horse he got on was Covergirl owned by Frontier Rodeo Company. She took him to an 83.5-point ride. That effort also put him at the top of the leaderboard in the second round.
The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing saw four runs that were under 17-seconds on Thursday, and more that will advance to the progressive round. The fastest time of the night went to Colorado’s Ivy Conrado who stopped the clock in 16.77 seconds. Conrado finished as the runner up last week at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver and is on a push to qualify for her first NFR. She is now fifth in the first round.
More importantly, she will get to compete again. There are a total of 214 barrel racers competing here. The 70 who have the fastest times progress to a second round and their times will be added together to determine the top 12 final-round qualifiers.
Other barrel racers that were successful on Thursday include; Shelley Morgan, Canton, Texas, 16.79; Kelly Bruner, Millsap, Texas, 16.85; Carley Richardson, Pampa, Texas, 16.96; Taylor Langdon, Aubrey, Texas, 17.03; Casey Doebbler, Stephenville, Texas, 17.27; Martha Wright, Dublin, Texas, 17.36; Terra Gernentz, Colorado City, Texas, 17.51; and TK Lawrence, Williston, N.D., 17.55. The first round will be completed Tuesday night after the 21st performance. Second round qualifiers will be determined at that time and all of these women have the potential to advance.
