VS back in N.M., Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, 4D barrel and pole jackpot, BJA

We’ve been blessed with some more rain and the country is putting on its Sunday best. That dry, windy April had me a little concerned, as I’m sure others were too. We’re over half done calving and the cows are giving lots of milk and making for some fat calves already.

Vesicular stomatitis virus has been confirmed in New Mexico’s Grant county. Grant County is in the southwestern part of the state and borders Arizona. The VS was diagnosed in a horse, but can afflict other livestock and also humans. VS is an infectious viral disease that causes painful blister-like lesions on the lips, nostrils, tongue, teats and coronary band. It’s not generally fatal unless an animal simply refuses to eat and drink due to the pain of the lesions. Humans can become infected when handling the sick animals, touching contaminated materials or equipment, and tissue, blood or viral cultures. This is nasty stuff and can lead to quarantines for shipment from state to state. If you’re going to be traveling through that region, it would be a good idea to find out if there are any restrictions or recommendations about it.

The 65th Annual Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is May 14-17. There’s more than just a bucking horse sale though, as there’s also matched bronc riding with some of the best saddle bronc riders in the country entered, plus bucking horse futurity, bull riding, wild horse racing, horse races, a big parade and a trade show. Miles City throws the doors wide open and welcomes everyone with a big smile, so it’s sure worth going to. It will probably rain, but that’s part of the celebration too. Have a great week and I hope you did something special for the Mom or Moms in your life. They are pretty special ladies. Mine’s been gone for five years and I still miss her. I hope I’m half the mom that she was.
