Johnson-Rose Angus is owned by Stuart and Gay Johnson and his sisters, Pearl Johnson and Bonnie and Clint Rose. They hosted an excellent crowd for their annual bull sale held at Mobridge Livestock. Since this is this family’s 43rd sale, history and strong customer relations have helped make this an outstanding sale. This year’s sale proved to be their best ever, and every bull found a new home.
This herd breeds cattle with strong maternal traits, with the goal of making their cow herd stronger with each generation. These bulls showed a lot of rib and shape, with muscle down their backs and hindquarters. This firm enjoys a lot of support from neighbors and many customers who sell their calves at Mobridge Livestock.
Many good sire lines, including both calving ease and performance traits, were represented in this offering.
Top selling bull of the day was Lot 1, selling for $14,000 to Russell Farms, Selby, South Dakota He was a registered bull with EPDs of CED 4, BW 1.2, WW 53, YW 89, MILK 10 and $W 38.99. With a 77 pound birth weight, he weaned at 755 pounds, and had an average daily gain of 4.29 pounds per day. Sired by STJ Classic 1, back to Rito 6I6, he was out of a daughter of Stenberg Coalition 509 who was a first calf heifer. She has bred back on her first cycle. This bull grew to a yearling weight of 1,329 pounds.
Another top selection for Russell Farms was Lot 27 at $13,500. This was one of my favorite bulls. He had the heaviest actual yearling weights in the entire crop. He was sired by Sinclair Net Present Value and out of a two-year-old daughter of Cole Creek Cedar Ridge IV. He welcomed the world at 70 pounds, weaned at 786 pounds, and grew to a yearling weight of 1367 pounds.
Lot 20 sold for $12,500 to Ben Bieber, Trail City, South Dakota. This grandson of Final Answer went back to BJJ GI Joe 34 on his mother’s side. This calving ease bull was born on April Fool’s Day and had an adjusted weaning weight of 836 pounds. His scrotal measurement was 39.3 cm.
Keith Lesmeister, Mobridge, South Dakota, chose Lot 22 at $12,500. He was a Final Answer grandson who was out of a daughter of Cole Creek Cedar Ridge IV. Double bred for calving ease, he was born at 76 pound. He weaned at 744 pounds and reached 1,267 pounds as a yearling. He had gained 4.16 pounds per day.
The gavel fell at $12,500, and once again Keith Lesmeister, had purchased a top bull in Lot 21. He was sired by one of the Final Answer sons and out of a Rito 6I6 of 4B20 6807 two-year-old heifer. He had a 78 pound birth weight, a weaning weight of 755 pounds, and a yearling weight of 1 271 pounds.
All in all, this was a great day for this family ranch. They served an excellent dinner before the sale, and they truly respect and appreciate their customers.
