Another big crowd gathered at the Mohnen Ranch west of Mitchell, S.D., for their annual bull sale. It’s been fun for me to watch the progress and success of this family and this great herd of Angus cattle. This sale attracts purebred breeders, and top commercial cattlemen, as well as many longtime loyal customers and friends.

Steve Mohnen worked as a herdsman for Howard Hillman’s Bon View Farms, and he used that time to learn and prepare for the challenges of breeding his own herd of cattle. This past month at the National Western Stock Show, this herd produced the Grand Champion Carload of Angus Bulls. In this Denver Carload were many of the features of this year’s great sale. Many of these same bulls were sired by a featured home-raised sire, Mohnen South Dakota 402. This bull sires uniformity, muscle, big tops with excellent feet and legs, and quiet dispositions.

This was a great sale—not only for this family, but also for South Dakota.

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 33, Mohnen Global 1274, a son of SAV Harvestore 0338. His mother was Mohnen Jilt 1655, daughter of Wulf’s EXT and the Pathfinder cow, Mohnen Jilt 910. The Mohnen “Jilt” cow line is one of the most prolific cow lines in the Angus breed. This bull was a member of the Denver Carload. With a 918 lb. weaning weight, he grew to a yearling weight of 1,643 pounds His EPDs were BW 3.1, WW 67, YW 115, MILK 31, MARB 0.66, REA 0.57, and $B 117.69. His rib eye was 17.7 sq. in. and he had an IMF ratio of 107. He had a 43.29 scrotal measurement. He sold for $46,000 to Select Sires, Plains City, Ohio and McConnell Angus, Dix, Neb.

Lot 1, Mohnen East River 574, sold for $42,000 to Sexing Technologies, Navasota, Texas. This Denver Carload bull was sired by Mohnen South Dakota 402, and out of a Jilt daughter and by SAV Heartbeat 9222. With EPDs of BW 3.8, WW 78, YW 134, MILK 25, MARB 0.52, and REA 0.57, he measured a 17.7 sq. in. rib eye and a 40.59 cm. scrotal.

Another highly sought after bull was Lot 21, Mohnen Deadwood 1114. The gavel fell at $38,000 and this bull is now owned by Shawn Frederick from Nebraska. This son of Mohnen South Dakota was out of a dam by TC Total 410. This Denver bull had EPDs of BW 1.5, WW 67, YW 113, MILK 29, Marb 0.57, and REA 0.62.

Lot 17 sold for $37,500 to Pine Coulee Bulls, Absarokee, Mont. Mohnen Big Valley 1244 was sired by South Dakota and out of a Jilt Daughter sired by SAV Final Answer 00035. His IMF was 5.69 to ratio 140.
