The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association (RQHBA) hosted their 15th annual sale at the Cadillac Ranch near Belle Fourche, South Dakota, Aug. 30. RQHBA was started by a progressive group of breeders that, as individuals, did not have enough colts to have their own sale. But as a group, are able to host a fantastic sale with a variety of working, show and performance pedigrees.
This sale has progressed to be a highly recognized performance and prospect sale. This year’s sale was no exception. When topping the hill to the Cadillac Ranch 3 hours before the sale, it was obvious there was going to be a standing room only crowd by sale time.
The weanlings sold through this sale are eligible to show in the Don Brunner Memorial Yearling Futurity in mid August of next year and are also eligible to return as 2- and 3-year-olds to compete in the Ranch Horse Futurity held prior to the sale.
The top selling weanling on the day was Lot 30, Cowboys Fast Guy a May 2015 buckskin stud colt sired by Watch Me Go Cowboy x Sir Bea Cowboy and out of a Dutchmans Guy x Frenchmans Guy mare. This colt sold at $3,750 to Tyree and Kerry Larmer of Williston North Dakota and was bred by Glen and Janet Long.
Selling at $3,500 was lot 32, Short Go Cowgirl, a blue roan filly by Sir Bea Cowboy x Bee Lowa Cowboy and out of a Last Canal x Guatamala Canal mare. Rick Hopkins of Muskogee Oklahoma, was the buyer, the filly was bred by Glen and Janet Long.
Lot 44X, Gotta French Cowboy, a palomino-roan colt bred by LeAnn Bender sold to Thad Olson, Whitewood, South Dakota, for $3,100.
Selling at $1,900 was lot 33, Bea French Girl, a palomino filly bred by Glen and Janet Long that sold to James Duprel, Sturgis, South Dakota.
Topping the riding horses was lot 77, Cee Heart Tomcat, a 2002 sorrel gelding by Ima Dee Duty x Lenas Heavy Duty x Doc O Lena and out the Cee Heart Tomasina mare. This gelding is a finished heading horse, ready to haul and win on. The horse was consigned by Ivan Brovant and sold to Terry McPherson, Piedmont, South Dakota for $17,000.
Selling at $11,250 was lot 84, Ziparod Play Maker, a 2004 red roan gelding sired by Hot Roan Rodder x Hotroddin Zipper. This big, gentle, do anything ranch horse sold to Lynn Weishaar and was consigned by Ty & Melissa Fowler.
Fowlers also had the next top selling horse at $9,500. Lot 5, WS Major Feature is a 2010 palomino gelding sired by Feature Hank out of Frosty Feature and a PC Ikewood Oaks x Docs Oak Sugar mare. Dick Richter, Enning, South Dakota, was the buyer.
The next high selling rider was lot 96, GJL Cowboys Sugar a 2010 bay roan mare consigned by Gary and Shirley Waddell. This mare by Sir Bea Cowboy x Bee Lowa Cowboy is out of a Gotta Sweet Leo x Gotta Sweet Guy and was purchased as a weanling at the RQHBA sale. Frank and Wyatt Huber, Martin, South Dakota, were the buyers at $7,500
The 2015 RQHBA Futurity show paid out nearly $4,000 in several divisions, including yearling gelding, yearling mare, yearling stallion and 2-3 year old ranch/trail. The top winners in each division were:
**Yearling stallion, Colonels Tequila, owned by Travis Rogers and bred by LeAnn Bender
**Yearling gelding, Booneys King, owned by Tom Coolahan and bred by Dave & Susan Reisland
**Yearling mare, MRQH Sugarwood Polly owned by Zane Huntley and bred by Jerry and Lynda Simons. All of the yearlings were purchased in the 2013 sale.
Winning the Ranch Horse Futurity was Addalittlestyle, a 2013 gelding owned by Tom Coolahan, ridden by Stoyan Lucey and bred by Glen and Janet Long.
